Day 29-31 LA and Environs

Los Angeles CA

Well the last few days is the final stop. We mainly spent our time in Disneyland and doing some last  minute bargain hunting. All in all we have had a terrific time, the kids are older this time and have enjoyed it alot. Of course they love Disney etc, but hopefully the rest of the trip is etched in their minds.

In closing our 2011 USA trip blog, I make the following observations.

The National Parks service is a great institution, the parks are so well kept and resourced, their diversity is oustanding and we never got sick of visiting.

The roads and freeways are awesome, if only we could make roads that good. The US countryside is so easily reachable. Remote outback US style is being more than 15 minutes from an Interstate highway.

Tipping, I just dont understand it, I know the wages are low, but if I got $10-$15 per table per hour, then I’d be happy to busk tables.

There are no old cars in the US, I dont think we saw many cars older than 5 yrs.

LA is huge and has proportional amounts of traffic, any time of the day, hence the drivers in LA are not as courteous as the remainder of what we visited.

New Zealand is known for its trout fishing … we were told this  by a man who asked where we were from !

Alcohol is cheap, Jack Daniels $15 per 1 litre , cars are also cheap.

Las Vegas is expanding and consuming vast resources, with little or no regard to the surrounding desert.

The US Marines, really know how to hold an Airshow, well done MCAS Miramar.

We are planning our next visit.

Thankyou for reading

Day 28 Disneyland

DisneyLand CA

Early start to meet the crowds, and crowds there was. I think the rain yesterday kept people away, they came on force under a proper Californian Sunny Day…yeah hah.

Got to most of the rides using fast pass tickets, good system. Indiana Jones ride, broke down whilst we were in it, about 10 meters from the end, had to dismount via step ladder.

Left the park to go out to dinner, Olive Garden, YUMMMM…then backl to Disneyland for the night show at California Adventure park, awesome display of water, lights, laser and flames…..outstanding…..back into D/Land for some more nightime adventure, leaveing the park at 11.30pm….Been there over 12 hours and the kids are still ready to go on more stuff…..enough we said…rest required.

Day 27 Hollywood, Universal Studios

Hollywood, CA

Weather . Terrible…….heavy drizzle, no wind…it was not going away in a hurry…Sunny California !

90 minutes to get there …..bad traffic.

Arrived and staretd exploring, in the rain….poncho’s were the order of the day, the crowds were small, which meant queuing was minimal….good.

Spent all day there and then back to the hotel for Red Robin dinner…yummbo.

Tomorrow,,,,,,Disney

Day 26 Los Angeles bound

San Diego – Los Angeles

Spent the morning driving around SD, the weather has turned sour, low cloud and heavy drizle, no wind. Not cold though.

Drove through the Old Town and then down to the Mexican border, being very carefull not to get stuck in the wrong lane on the freeway and before you know it, Tijuana…no thanks…you could see the Mexican city and its sprawl quite easily, borderded by 10 ft high razor wire.

Back north, nicer areas towards Coronado Penisula. Stopped and took some shots, beforesetting the controls for LA.

The further north (closer to LA) the more traffic anf wider freeways, HOV lanes etc.. Arrived at our motel shortky afterwards, reunions with the  Visini’s and a night in.

Day 25 Safari – California Style

San Diego Wildlife Safari Park

After a big breakfast at Denny’s and saying goodbyes to the Visini’s (for a day anyway), we headed north to SD Wildlife Park.

What a fantastic establishment. A huge park, in a natural valley, offiering gentle slopes, watereways and rocky outcrops. We walked around and saw most of the displays, then took a trolley ride through the back lot and got up close to some of the animals. Really clean and natural environment for the animals, a great zoo.

Finished around mod afternoon and found a nearbt shopping centre to catch a few more bargains. Red Robin for dinner and back to the room…

Tomorrow LA..

Noticing traffic is getting bad, but the freeways here in SD are so big, the HOV lane is two lanes, almost your own freeway and there are no tolls for HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle, two or more people)

Day 24 Sea World

Sea World , San Diego

No 1 stop today was Sea World.

Sunday, so we expected large crowds, but they never seemed to come, it was reasonably quiet. Moved around the park, trying to catch the shows and displays. We were a little disappointed in the live shows as they seemed to have changed the format alot, no more jumping from Orca’s, or swimming with them….the dolphins display was equally subdued, lacking the actaual animals, more like a show from Cirque de Soliel. A bit bland actually. Anyway, the kids liked the rides and sideshow stuff, se we all had fun.

Dinner was a steak restaurant next door to the hotel and seemed a great choice for my birthday dinner….great meal and good fun……

A great day all round.

Day 23 MCAS Air Show, Miramar

Miramar, Marine Corp Air Station, Top Gun School

An early rise to get to the show early. Arrived at 845, brilliant directions and personel guiding traffic at every corner. Free admission, free parking, what more could you ask for. Huge queues starting, but moving..We started by looking around the static displays, difference here is that you can walk right up to the displays and tocuh the planes etc…fantastic…….lots of things to see and do…

Made our way to our box seats, front row, right in the middle of the viewing field, so we go to see everything right up close.

We thought the static displays were great, the flying displays complemented them, there was something happening throughout the sky all the time, The marine display was incredible. The f16 came out and almost broke the sound barrier, you could just start to see the vapour cloud enveloping the plane.. The Fa18′s and Harrier were great, especially the Harrier, we had never seen it, and to see a high speed jet, hover…its an incredible sight.

The Blue Angels finished off the display and they lived up to their name, a great display of extremely coordinated flight.

Cant really say too much, only Avalon will have to really do some miracles for me to even attend after this one.

Well done America, was a show and it was free.

Day 22 Destination > San Diego

Las Vegas (NV) – San Diego (CA)

Today was back behind the wheel and heading south toward SD. First stop was the outlet mall at the California border to snap up some last minute bargains and back on the road. The freeway is 2 lanes now, and fantastic, but a littel boring, speed limit…no idea, because no one seems to follow it, we sat on 80mph, just cruised….nice…Took a detour at Victorville to find a Plane Boneyard, we call them wrecking yards, couldnt get that close but could see an old Qantsa Jumbo, stripped of doors and windows. This place was a little wierd as it was largely a ghost town, abandoned when the Airforce left the base some years ago, now all that is really there is a Federal Jail (high security) and Southern California Logistics centre for freight…

Back on the the highway, heading toward LA, but we were just glancing off the outer fringe to get to San Diego, the smog thickened and the traffic got worse, stopping and slowing all them time, rush hour in LA….YUK…..

Arrived on schedule around 6pm to our Hotel, met the Visini family and caught up on out travels and pizza for dinner.
