Day 5 Eucla – Caiguna

More kilometres today…

Further westward across the Nullabor.

No trees, no road kill…and the occasional RFDS runway along the highway…

Stopped at Mundrabilla.fueled up $2.58 per litre, getting more expensive…🥺

Hamburger with the lot was $29, chiko roll $7.80…Nullabor pricing….we didn’t indulge in such costly food..

The Nullabour is dotted with road houses…after Eucla we dropped down off the plateau onto the lower flats….the scenery changing to more trees the further west we go… tomorrow we will finish this road and starr our final push north towards the Kimberly via the Pilbara..

Tonight our first Camp fire

Day 4 Yalata to Eucla (WA)

Another early start… we’ve been driving 3 days and finally left South Australia behind….but lots to see….spent most of the day cruising along the Great Australian Bite, stopping at various observation lookouts.. spectacular scenery and blue skies seems to be staying with us….diversion northward to the old Eyre Hwy to visit Koonalda Homestead…. fascinating story of how they just picked up and left in 1984… newspapers on the kitchen bench back to the 80,s.

Walked around there, quick lunch and corregations for 16 km or so back to the black top…..heading further west we approached the WA border, met with WA quarantine officials and we were quickly on our way..10 km into WA and we found out nightly stop at Eucla Old Telegraph station…had an explore around and walked to the ocean, old Jetty then back to camp…dinner and fired up starlink to bring you this post…the Nullabor is a long piece of road..only half way so far.

Day 3 Kimba – Yatala

Sunrise start for a  walk along Roora Trail to Whites Knob lookout, overlooking Kimba and environs…then hit the road passing the big Galah, half way across Australia signposts and heading west..again….still… about 1500km so far, diesel is cheaper than Melbourne by about 20c per litre, no supply issues..

Our first stop was Mt Wudinna, apparently the 2nd largest monolith in Australia, behind Uluru….scouted around then headed towards Paldippa rock, another massive piece of granite but this having wave like faces on both north and south faces…likens to wave rock in WA… spectacular….back on the road for more rocky outcrops then lunch and Minnipa…. delicious home cooked hamburgers that Darlene had checked online reviews for..heading further west se stopped at a Windmill museum at Penong then drove into the sunset for a late arrival at Yatala….setup camp..dinner and off to bed.  Tomorrow we enter WA.

Day 2. Kimba SA

After a restful night in Renmark, we set off at 8am to drive further westward. Clear blue skies were short lived as a heavy drizzle and showers seemed to jump in front of us at every turn.. Morning tea stop at our fave bakery in Burra, “Honey Stick” and “Berlinner Donut”  were consumed along with tea and coffee…back on the road again and more rain…finally cleared around midday, so we stopped at Wilmington for lunch…then descending the Southern Flinders Ranges towards Port Augusta..great views as we drove through Horrack’s pass down the hills..Port Augusta really defines the start of the outback the sign saying s it all..left turn to Perth, right Darwin…we took the left…soon arriving at The Tanks…five old water storage tanks now used to store old car tyres…millions of them… moving on towards our night stop , passing Iron Knob and finally Kimba….pub dinner and back to camp…

Day 1

Melbourne to Renmark   707km

Early start, 4.30am to get out of the Melbourne metropolis. Met up with our travelling partners for this trip, Tom and Di. We met where a few of our trips had started, Canning , Flinders Ranges, Bendleby to name a few…we set the cruise controls for Renmark and head due North East along the Calder Highway…lunch at our usual bakery in Ouyen, a quick vanilla slice and back on the road towards South Australia..Renmark wasn’t too far away, but first a Quarantine Check at the border, nothing to declare, then rolling again towards our final stop for the day…checked into the caravan park and relaxed for a short time before walking into Renmark (gotta get those steps up!) and settling for a dinner at the Renmark Club on the banks of the Murray..the river is very wide here and makes for some great photos…back to our respective residences for a well deserved few more hours of sleep… tomorrow we drive westward with our stop set at Kimba…more then…
